The Calgary Temple Site

    

We now know where the Calgary Temple will be built.   I read about the exact location in the Calgary Herald yesterday.   Today I got official confirmation that the article is correct.   Its in NW Calgary.

AK also found a link to the Deseret News today that names the location.

     

Today if we want to go to the temple we travel about 3 hours south to Cardston.  We also have the option of going about the same distance to the north to Edmonton.  It pretty much takes most of a day and with gas prices its close to $100 a trip by the time its all said and done.

How far will it be?   Well, I must admit for an FHE activity last night Jenelle, Jamie, Candi and I decided to time how long it took to drive to the temple site.

    

According to Google maps it said it would take 15 minutes.  The actual time from when I put the van in reverse to back out of the driveway to when we parked in front of the Royal Oak Chapel was 12 minutes and 38 seconds.   We figured that when the construction is all done on Crowchild it will be closer to 10 minutes.   Can you believe it?

   

It was dark when we went so we couldn't take pictures.  Today Candi and I drove home a different way so we could drive by to take some pictures of the site for all of my readers.

Stoney Trail is part of the Ring Road that will eventually go all around the city.   The northwest and northeast portions should be completed by 2009.    The Temple site is only a couple blocks off of Stoney Trail.

   

This will be a Park & Ride for the C-Train station that will be built here.

Interesting note:  The station was initially planned for completion after 2023, but in November, 2007 Calgary city council called a special meeting and approved and funded a 2011 completion date.    The temple is expected to be ready in 3 years.   As Jamie said "Coincidence?  I think not."

The site is on top of a hill.  That's the steeple of the Chapel.

There is an open area about 100 yards between the street and the parking lot.

   

We went to the south end of this parking lot and took the following pictures.

All the open space you see is part of the church property.

 Ironically there is another church at the bottom of the hill that doesn't agree with our teachings.   This is their parking lot.

Its about 200m x 200m.  That works out to about 654 feet x 654 feet or just under 10 acres (my calculations using google maps to measure).

  

I can't wait to see plans and drawings for the temple.
